Can someone sue for slander if charges were filed for theft but then dropped due to lack of evidence.?

Husband was accused of theft involving a bank deposit bag that another employee took to the bank. A lie detector test was given and it was said that he “failed”. Charges were filed and he was arrested but then all charges were dropped by the State Attorney due to lack of evidence. Can we sue for slander? There were a lot of other people involved who could have taken this money and the owner of the business are prominent people in our town and it was said that the arrest was “politically motivated”. They wanted to get this resolved to cause the business owner no further problems. The detective in the cas told my husband, even before questioning, that he was going to arrest him and set a high bond.

Libel and slander?

We must be kidding! I found out today, from an attorney, that the only way Libel/Slander can be considered harmful is if it is repeated to a third party. So, my former employer, can get away with a lie, as long as they do not repeat it to another!
Is this true? We have no rights/protection? Can they say any manner of thinf against you, as long as it is kept within the company? For example: Such-n-So was terminated for stealing company funds from the safe. But as long as they do not tell outsiders, it is okay, as long as it is not told to a third party, outside the company. Such-n-So has no legal recourse? This can’t be true. Is it true?
What if they put it in writing? (Libel) but am told by attorney that there is still nothing I can do as long as they keep it within the company and in my personal file. Nothing! The answers I receive vary so much.
richie, what now? It has been put in writing. Again, as long as it is not repeated to a 3rd party, I am told that it is okay for them to do.

Bad experience at local restaurant….put personal comments on myspace….is it slander?

My husband and I were out at our small town bar on a Friday night around midnight. There were maybe 5 people in the bar at the time. We were discussing St. Patrick’s Day and an event the local fire company was having when the owner of the bar became verbally upset and confrontational. He told other patrons not to come to the fire dept. event because he was having a band too. We never were soliciting or bashing his event! His bartender then told the owner she thought were should leave, so he told us to go or he would call the police. We left quietly, almost laughing because the whole event was childish and immature. Anyway, on my husband and my status’ on Myspace we then put “never going back to***” We live in a small town and heard through the grapevine that he went to an attorney bc we slandered his restaurant. Is there any basis for this legally? It wasn’t the food, it was the personal attitude and disrespect received that causes us never to return. Any thoughts or opinions are appreciated!! Thanks!
